Around the Bend     30" x 24"

I was looking for information about something that took place years ago, and my old blog provided the answer!  I discovered that the blog was really a history of my art life, so you may enjoy taking a look at some of the older past entries.  No promises here, but I hate to let it go, so you may get a post from time to time.

This painting, Around the Bend, was recently shown at the Art Ovation Hotel in Sarasota, FL.  Every few months the hotel hosts a new art exhibition.  My painting was included in an exhibition for members of the National Association of Women Artists-Florida Chapter.  If you're an artist and would like wider exposure, this organization promotes exhibitions of women's art and has two levels of membership.  Take a look here!

One good thing about the blog is that you are invited to comment, which you can do below if you're so inclined.  You know I love to hear from you.

NAWA, and Summer Sparkle by Everglades artist Jo-Ann Sanborn

Summer Sparkle, 2015, Jo-Ann Sanborn
acrylic on canvas, 11"x 14"

Today's painting is my entry for the National Association of Women Artist's (NAWA) 126th National Member's Show.  It's portrays a bit of coastline off Everglades City where are there is some tall palms.

The NAWA exhibition will be held at the Sylvia Wald and Kim Po Gallery, 417 Lafayette Street, 4th Floor, NYC 10003, from August 24th thru September 23. There will be a reception on Thursday, September 10, 2015, 6-8 p.m.

The National exhibitions are always exciting since the mixed media show includes the work of some of the best women artists in the country. You will not be disappointed!

If you are in New York during that time period, please make a visit to the gallery.  If you take a photo of yourself with my painting, I'll be sure and post it!

Yes, I'm pretty sure that that's my painting, hanging in the Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Gallery, in New York City.  You can see it if you look very closely on the left in the background.  It's hanging as part of the National Association of Women Artist's 124th Annual Exhibition. Looks like a nice crowd.

As a regional painter, it gives me the opportunity to be seen in a wider context.  It forces me to think in broader terms about my art, and to "take myself seriously" when sending a painting into the wider world and into such esteemed company.  I'm honored to be a member of this terrific organization.

You can see more photos from the reception, or like NAWA on Facebook here.  If you live on or near Marco Island, you'll be able to see an exhibition of the Florida Chapter of NAWA at the Art Center of Marco Island in January.  Don't miss it!

Light Wind, painting by Everglades artist Jo-Ann Sanborn

Light Winds,  2013, Jo-Ann Sanborn
acrylic on canvas, 12"x12"

Marco Island Center for the Arts director Lynn Holley visited me about a month ago and ask if I would be willing to chair the Gallery Committee at the Arts Center for the coming year.  Since I believe in giving back, and it's been a while since I had been active in the broader arts community, I agreed to give it a try.

Some of the programs for the coming year are already in place or in the works.  For example, we will have an exhibition for the Florida Chapter of the National Association of Women artists in January, and one on Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, in Feb of 2014. And there's a core committee of wonderful members in place too.

If you have an idea for an exhibition, want to sponsor an exhibition, or have an interest in joining this active and fun committee, just let me know.  Our first meeting will be August 5, at the Art Center.  Hope you'll join me in producing some new and exciting art exhibitions for Marco.

Today's painting, Light Wind is painted in acrylic on canvas.  I like the square format very much, and will do a couple more companion pieces to this one as time allows in the weeks ahead.

What a nice time we had at the artist's Tabletalk luncheon yesterday. There were eleven of us, which is great for this time of year, and as always the conversation was lively and inspiring. We start by going around the table and telling about our art month--struggles, joys, and rewards, talk about an art subject through lunch and end with "show and tell" or a request for critique. It's not a hard and fast schedule, but has developed as a way to be sure that everyone has a chance to share what they'd like. I hope everyone goes away as energized as I do!

Got a really nice surprise in the mail yesterday. My painting "Family Outing" entered in the National Association of Women Artists annual exhibition received the Dorothy Seligson Memorial Award for works on Canvas. It's only a small award, but means so much to me, particularly since the show is at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. If you're in the city before the end of the month, stop in and see the exhibition--and if you do, please take a photo of it hanging for me!
An artists work should come from the heart, and never for a potential award, but when it happens its a wonderful affirmation that some else likes the work, too.
