ArtWalk! Southern Spring painting by Everglades artist Jo-Ann Sanborn

Southern Spring, 2012, Jo-Ann Sanborn
Acrylic on canvas, 36" x 48"

I dropped and of course, broke, my camera, and can't seem to get a good photo of this painting on my phone.  Another camera is on order, and my very dear client was kind enough to take this photo for me of a  commission just finished and delivered.

This lovely couple already own one of my paintings, and found that they liked living with it.  They thought of my work to fill the foyer at the entrance to their home.

Commissions are very difficult for me, since you never really know what someone else is envisioning. Without clear direction, I was on my own as far as composition and to some extent, color.  I wanted the painting to be strong enough to hold it's own between the two beautifully carved pillars.  I wanted to give it some distance, too, bringing you in rather than stopping you, creating a barrier.  And I wanted it different from the other painting they owned, yet compatible.

I'm always a little nervous delivering a finished, comission piece.  They loved it, and said,

"I can't tell you how pleased we are with our commission. The more we look at it, the more proud we are.  I want you to know that your two paintings displayed in our home make us very proud. This painting is highlighted in the foyer niche and will make a statement to all who visit us. Thank you!

Phew!

The Artist Colony at the Esplanade's ArtWalk is tonight from 5 - 8.  We always try to have something special for you, and tonight, in addition to our usual refreshments and new art work, we'll have both Michael Smith and some Strummers to play for you.

If you take part in our Scavenger Hunt, and get all the right answers, you"ll be eligible to win our Easter Basket, filled with goodies from each of the artists in the Colony.

Hope to see you tonight!

Red, White and Blues, painting by Everglades artist JoAnn Sanborn

Red, White, and Blues
acrylic on canvas, 20"x24"

Red, White and Blues is the theme of the Artist Colony at the Esplanade's June Last Wednesday Art Walk to be held this Wednesday, June 30, from 5-8 p.m. Each of the three galleries will offer refreshments, music, and new art work for you to enjoy. We'll also be having our People's Choice Award, where you participate by voting on your three favorite pieces created for the theme Red, White and Blues. You can see mine, above.

While you are welcome to visit the galleries any Wednesday thru Saturday, visitors and residents alike are really enjoying the Last Wednesday Art Walks. The People Choice themed Art Walks are a lot of fun, and it's a chance to meet and talk with the artists about their work in an easy, relaxed atmosphere.

What do you talk with an artist about? With me, any talk of the Everglades is always welcome. I love hearing your stories about your visits there, and about your reaction paintings of my favorite landscape. You can also talk about any particular painting, such as theme, colors, and medium. To tell an artist what you feel when you look at a painting will also get a conversation started.

Art can make you laugh, cry, wonder, look more deeply at yourself or others. It adds depth and dimension to our community. So if you're on Marco Island, or close by, come along and join the conversation. I hope to see you tonight!

Last Wednesday Art Walk, Please Step Forward Daily Painting by Everglades Artist Jo-Ann Sanborn

Please Step Forward
5x7, acrylic on board
$150

The Artist Colony at the Esplanade will present the Last Wednesday Art Walk in the studio galleries tonight from 5-8 p.m. You'll be offered a glass of wine or coffee, treats to munch on, and enjoy music in each of the three galleries while you visit with artists and see the new work produced this month.

Each of the three galleries will have new work to show and tell about. One of the joys of the Artist Colony is that it's fun to see what everyone else is producing. Ask the artists about the inspiration for a particular piece, or why they chose to portray something in a particular manner. We're all so different. Do you have a favorite yet?

It's been so cold that I haven't ventured too far out lately, but have found plenty of inspiration on the new Marsh Trail. I've got two new paintings from that area, and am working on a large piece. Stop in tonight, and see what's new!
