Hard to believe that it's almost Labor Day weekend, which to me signals the end of summer.  I know many people on Marco Island feel differently, but summer is my favorite season.   The skies are magnificent, and the afternoon thunderstorms so powerful and dramatic. 

 

Here's part of a blog post I wrote in the summer of 2007--six years ago: 

 

   I've added a link to the Daily Painters Guild website. I don't know any of them, but have been admiring their work for some time. Most of them paint every day, as I do. Their paintings are usually quite small. I paint small paintings sometimes, but use the summer when I'm not so busy and have a little more space in the studio to do larger works.

I know several of the daily painters in person, own a few of their works myself, and paint small paintings at least three times a week!

Morning Cohorts

A friend knocked on my door early yesterday morning and urged me to grab a coffee and come out to see the morning light. She knew I'd be up early, trying to get all my computer duties finished before the light came up in my studio and I could paint.

There was a lovely, bright band of sunlight just below morning clouds. As we walked and chatted the clouds turned lovely shades of pink and lavender and grey and the rising sun's light changed the sky from dawn to morning.

It didn't take long for the incredible magic of gorgeous morning light to pass. Not enough time to get out my brushes, although it may show up in a painting, soon. Glad I didn't miss it!

Spring Morning

After being lazy about it for a while, I'm renewing my efforts to paint a small painting most days. The paintings will always be a day behind, because the blog is a morning thing for me and I want to have something ready to show you. A small painting a day will build inventory for the shows to come, and allow experimentation with color and techniques. It's a great way to warm up, and since I can do some of them in an hour or two, there'll still be time to work on larger paintings. It's fun to do because there isn't the emotional involvement of a large painting. Most of them will be from photographs or memory. Today's was painted on a bright pink background that still peeks through.

Then, when I get really committed, I'll paint the sunrise each morning. Sunrise is so beautiful here on Marco Island. Each morning has it's own distinct personality of colors and pattern. But getting up and out that early is a whole other issue!

After adjusting the clouds in yesterday's painting I was able to finish this painting as well. You may have seen the beautiful pink-yellow morning a few days ago. The quiet stillness of morning with light on the water brings peace to the soul. This painting will be in the Museum of the Everglades show later this month.
